Nothing tastes like home, and often our fondest food memories are filled with meals shared in the company of loved ones. My Sunday mornings as a child always looked the same: Groggy-eyed, I’d walk into the kitchen while my dad would be stooped over the kitchen top making perfectly round dosas (which is more fun to watch than make). My sister and I would bring out a plate piled with many dosas and some fresh coconut-cilantro chutney to the dining table, along with chocolate milk for the kids and tea for the adults—I wouldn’t change a thing.
As we grow older, we naturally make our own food memories through travels, and trying out new cuisines and experiences. But when it all boils down to comfort, it’s usually home we’re all reaching for. Whether it’s grandma’s traditional, love-laden meals, dad’s ritualistic barbecues or mum’s special Sunday roasts, we all carry some food nostalgia that shapes our eating habits as adults. Some secret recipes are passed down generations and even become a part of our culinary heirloom. Here’s a sneak-peak into the kitchens of our global community and their family’s culinary secrets.
