This year’s Iftar is plant based: The trend says so!
Keep it heavy on the green this Iftar
As vegan eating grows more popular, traditional and religious habits also grow with it. While a traditional Iftar meal contains a considerable amount of fat, this can be heavy to break the fast. Instead, having a fiber-rich breaking of the fast is more beneficial to the body when undergoing this fasting period.
To celebrate Ramadan in a healthier 2025, experts and dieticians are recommending the already popular plant based alternatives to otherwise heavy Iftar tables.
Plant based Iftar is good for both the body and the environment
Plant based eating is not only a mere fresh upgrade. It is a step towards sustainability (less greenhouse emissions, less traumatizing to the environment, uses less resources), and prioritizing plant based nutrients too (fiber, healthy fats, plant proteins).
Iftar 2025: Tips to keep it plant based and healthy
1. Fiber forward foods and protein
Fruits, vegetables, legumes, nuts, grains, and seeds will be the stars of the table. They will not only be providing the fiber, but a lot of plant protein too. Artichoke bakes, lentil soup, beans, chickpeas (Falafel), walnuts, and almonds are rich sources for example.
2. Healthy fats
Focus on healthier fats for the meals is best for plant based consumers during Iftar. Such as oils from nuts, avocado, a variety of seeds, and olive.
3. Keep the balance
The Iftar table shouldn’t skip the essentials like a lot of water, and carbs that the body needs after a day of fasting.
4. Count the vitamins
B12 is especially needed within a plant based diet, and Iftar tables are no exceptions. This fasting period is not the recommended time to skip on the daily vitamin intake.
