Holi 2025: What to eat during the festival of colors
Celebrating color, love and spring on your plate
Holi is the Hindu festival of colors, of celebrating love and spring, and marks the triumph of good over evil. This year it is being celebrated on Friday, March 14. Whether you’re celebrating with family, friends, in your hometown, or abroad – let your menu reflect the beautiful and vibrant Holi food.
What are the traditional Holi foods?
The most traditional dishes include something for everyone’s taste. Biryani being at the top of the list, brings the most colorful rice dish to Holi to celebratory plates.
Sticking to savory/salty dishes, chicken curry is another flavorful addition to celebrate both colors, and taste buds alike. A warm plate of chicken tikka masala might be a great option.
There are so many curry variations to try and guarantee the color of the festival reflected on your feast table as well: Like a vegetarian halloumi curry, or a chicken curry pasta!
What are the Holi desserts?
For those who celebrate the love with a sweet tooth, the most famous dishes include Gulab Jamun (a deep fried, and sugar syrup loving dessert made of milk solid, paneer and spices), or coconut laddoo (made with milk powder, sugar, milk, and grated coconut). Traditionally, coconut laddoo is also used for greetings during the festival.
