Fish sticks are a staple in many households, beloved by both young and old. However, consuming them in large quantities may pose hidden health risks that many are unaware of.

How Many Fish Sticks Are Safe to Eat?

According to the Consumer Center NRW, regularly consuming more than four fish sticks per week can be problematic. The reason: frying and baking at high temperatures can lead to the formation of acrylamide, a substance considered potentially carcinogenic. The darker the browning, the higher the acrylamide content.

High Fat and Salt Content as Additional Risks

Beyond acrylamide, many fish sticks contain high levels of fat, salt, and additives. Excessive consumption can increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases over time. Nutrition experts recommend enjoying fish sticks occasionally and opting for fresh fish as a healthier alternative.

Tips to Minimize Risks

To reduce potential health risks, experts suggest gentle cooking methods: bake fish sticks until they are golden yellow and preferably prepare them in the oven rather than frying. Checking the ingredient list is also advisable – products with a high fish content and minimal additives are better choices.
