Berlin cult burger conquers Germany: Burgermeister on course for expansion
New Locations & Big Plans
It all started in 2006 in a former public restroom at Berlin’s Schlesisches Tor subway station: The burger joint Burgermeister was born, quickly gaining cult status not just among hungry night owls thanks to its late opening hours but also for its taste and affordability.
For years, new locations have been popping up across the German capital, but one thing has become increasingly clear: Burgermeister has big plans to bring its beloved burgers to the entire country.
From Berlin’s Original to a National Brand
In the summer of 2024, Burgermeister announced ambitious expansion plans. In addition to its 10 existing Berlin locations, 11 more branches were planned in strategically important cities. A key milestone was the opening of the 15th location in the Schloss Arkaden shopping mall in Braunschweig, marking the start of its expansion year.
Another highlight was the opening of a branch in Berlin-Steglitz—at a location where McDonald's had operated for 40 years. This takeover not only underscores Burgermeister’s hunger for expansion but also highlights the changing fast-food landscape. It becomes clear: once purely regional businesses like Burgermeister have the potential to compete with traditional fast-food giants, whose branches are gradually disappearing
New Openings in 2025
2025 is all about growth. On March 7, Burgermeister celebrated the opening of its 16th location at Leopoldplatz in Berlin-Wedding. This 12th Berlin branch brings the signature Burgermeister vibe to one of the city's liveliest neighborhoods.
Further openings are planned this year in cities such as Stuttgart, Düsseldorf, and Frankfurt am Main.
A Glimpse into the Future
But this is just the beginning. Burgermeister plans to open a total of 25 new locations by the end of 2025. The focus is not only on expanding into new cities but also on strengthening its presence in existing markets. The goal: to bring a taste of Berlin’s burger culture to every city while maintaining a strong emphasis on quality.
A Success Model with Potential
Burgermeister is proving that a small Berlin burger joint can grow into a nationwide success story and even pose a real challenge to traditional fast-food chains.
With clear expansion plans, continuous openings, and a focus on quality, it remains to be seen which cities will be next to enjoy these cult burgers—and whether Burgermeister can maintain its high standards as it grows.
