Volkswagen is best known for its cars—but a specialty from the company’s canteens is once again making headlines. The VW Currywurst has surpassed its own sales record, remaining a bestseller that even rivals the company’s vehicle numbers.

Sausage Sales at an All-Time High

In 2024, the German car manufacturer sold a total of 8.552 million sausages, surpassing the previous year's record by 200,000. For comparison, Volkswagen’s vehicle sales in the same period reached 9.03 million units. Since its introduction in 1973, the VW Currywurst has been a staple of the company’s canteens and has long achieved cult status, now even available in retail stores.

New Variants Drive Demand

One reason for the increased sales is the expansion of the product range. In addition to the classic Currywurst—of which 6.317 million units were sold—the hot dog sausage introduced in 2021 has also become a bestseller, with 2.18 million units sold. According to HR director Gunnar Kilian, Volkswagen is already working on new variations to continue this success.

More Than Just a Canteen Snack

The VW Currywurst has gained a reputation far beyond the company’s factories. It’s not just popular in Volkswagen’s own canteens but is also sold in supermarkets and online stores. With its growing popularity, this unique product remains an unexpected yet highly successful symbol of the German automaker.
