Eid al-Fitr is fast approaching, and so are the festive meals that come with it. If you have been fasting this time of year, you’re probably looking forward to big meals for the bayram (holiday). We have you covered with these recipes. Save your favorites and plan the celebration.
What’s Eid al-Fitr?
Eid-al-Fitr, which roughly means “festival of breaking the fast”, marks the end of Ramadan, a month in which Muslims worldwide fast from dawn to sunset. It’s celebrated as the beginning of the 10th month on the Islamic calendar by breaking the fast with delicious meals and sharing meaningful gifts with loved ones.
This holiday is celebrated by many Muslim cultures. Each bringing their own delicious dishes from Southeast Asia, Middle East, and the Arab world to name a few.
In my family, food has always been the heart of Eid celebrations. We start the day with an elaborate breakfast spread that includes everything from fresh börek to egg plates. Following breakfast, we prepare a variety of dishes to welcome guests throughout the day. This includes sweet treats for everyone and cozy dishes for guests who traveled far to visit us. My favorite to help prepare is always the baklava with my grandmother! During the afternoon, visits to relatives and friends are a must.
At its core, Eid is about the joy of sharing the food you love with everyone around you. If you're looking for inspiration on what to serve your guests, here’s my selection of our favorite recipes.
